Residential Garage Door FAQs

Whether you’re sizing a new door, weighing repair against replacement, or trying to make sure you’re not overpaying, these are the questions our team hears most often. If something isn’t covered here, Overhead Door Company of the Northland has been answering them over the phone for more than 25 years.

Call (651) 381-5807 or submit a contact form, and we’ll respond within 4 business hours.

Low Ceiling

A residential garage door generally requires between 10 and 12 inches of headroom, depending on the spring system used. Your garage may need a low-headroom track system or a low-headroom-torsion rear-track system. Add a garage door opener, and you’ll typically need at least 15 inches for a standard ceiling-mounted unit. If your clearance is borderline, call us before you order anything. A quick conversation can save you a costly mismatch.

Standard Sizes

Unless you have an older garage, your opening is almost certainly a standard size.

DOOR SELECTION
Options for Every Opening
Standard sizes and custom configurations available
1,000+residential door configurations
13design collections, covering styles, windows & hardware
8–20 ftstandard widths in whole-foot increments
7 & 8 ftstandard heights

If your opening falls outside those ranges, we still have options. Overhead Door Company of the Northland offers more than 1,000 residential door configurations across 13 design collections, covering styles, window options, and hardware at a range of price points. Whether you need a standard single-car door or something sized for an older or custom-built garage, that depth of selection means we can match the opening rather than force a compromise.

Don’t Pay Too Much

We’re a locally owned company, and we’re happy to provide quotes or estimates over the phone. Some companies won’t do that, and we’d recommend avoiding them. We’ve heard too many stories of price gouging. Paying $600 for spring replacement is a rip-off, and companies that won’t give you any price guidance before a technician arrives are creating the conditions for exactly that kind of surprise.

Reputable companies can estimate common repairs, such as torsion spring replacement, cable work, or opener service, over the phone. We offer free consultations with honest, pressure-free recommendations and accurate quotes. If you’re not sure what something should cost, call us before you commit.

Repair vs. Replacement

Not every problem requires a new door. When repair is the smarter financial call, we’ll recommend it.

REPAIR VS. REPLACE
When Each Option Makes Sense
Assessed by an IDEA-certified technician every time
REPAIR IS LIKELY SMARTER
Broken springs, frayed cables, worn rollers, misaligned tracks, or a malfunctioning opener when the door’s structure is sound.
REPLACEMENT MAKES SENSE
Significant structural damage, repeated failure of major components, or a door that has reached the end of its service life (15–30 years).

Every assessment is performed by an IDEA-certified technician. You’ll get an honest evaluation, not a default pitch for a new door. That repair-before-replace philosophy is one of the reasons more than 82 percent of our business comes from repeat customers and referrals.
