Overhead Door Company of the Northland has been serving the Twin Cities metro since October 1995. What the Work Actually Looks Like

Technicians here work across a wider range of systems than most single-trade shops. The job spans residential garage door installation and repair, commercial overhead door systems, and loading dock equipment — including sectional steel doors, rolling steel doors, high-speed doors, fire-rated doors, and loading dock levelers and vehicle restraints. Some commercial work involves high-security or high-stress environments that may require security clearance.

The operation is built around field readiness. We maintain a spare service truck at all times, so crews aren’t left idle due to a maintenance issue. This is hands-on, field-based work: every day involves traveling to job sites, diagnosing mechanical and electrical systems, and completing installs or repairs with a high degree of independence.

Required Certification & Training

Every technician we bring on is required to earn certification from IDEA (the Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation) as a Commercial Sectional Door Systems Technician. IDEA is an independent nonprofit credentialing organization whose mission is to advance public safety and professionalism across the door-and-access systems industry. The Commercial Sectional Door Systems Technician designation validates a technician’s knowledge of products, installation methods, and servicing of commercial sectional door systems. That certification is the baseline here, not an achievement reserved for senior staff.

From there, technicians complete ongoing training and renew their credentials as part of a continuing education cycle. All technicians also undergo regular drug testing and background checks.

The top credential in the industry is the Automated Access Systems Master Technician designation, awarded by IDEA to technicians who have completed certification across multiple disciplines, including residential installation, commercial sectional doors, commercial rolling doors, and rolling steel fire doors. Three of our technicians have reached that level: Jeromy B., Phillip K., and JT Anderson. That’s not common. It’s what sustained commitment to advancement looks like in this trade, and it’s a direct reflection of what this company invests in.
